You might appreciate Peter Turchin’s Ultrasociety, where he describes a Z-shaped rather than a U-shaped curve from egalitarianism to hierarchical patriarchy and back to egalitarianism.
Turchin predicted January 6th based on a periodic oversupply of “elites” that culminates in intra-elite competition, violence and even revolution.
Turchin predicted the January 6th insurrection back in 2010.
Yes, I read Part l! In the series The Power of Myth Joseph Campbell talks about the Garden of Eden story. Near the end of the topic he mentions a goddess cult(?) but does not have time to elaborate much. Throughout the years I’ve wanted to know more about what he was referring to.
For me, this shows how mythological symbols change meaning over time and you couldn’t have picked a more relevant symbol. There is also esoteric meaning that can be considered as well.
I knew Joseph Campbell and had workshops with him at Esalen in the 1970s (I'm really old!). But the goddess to whom he refers -- ASHERAH, and we'll talk about her next time!--didn't have a cult. She was allied with the Canaanite god El and was his wife. She was also the first wife of Yahweh!!!!! When the cult of Yahweh wanted to destroy the rest of Canaanite religion, they had to get rid of Asherah, or they couldn't have a MALE-DOMINANT monotheism. You could, of course, have a monotheism that was centered around a SINGULARITY. In fact, a real monotheism can't be gendered, for if you have ONE gender, you must have at least one more. So, it was a slog. It took a long time to wipe out Asherah, and the beginning of her end is this myth. See you next time!
Ancient history, theology, mythology all fascinating and new to me; a thirst for knowledge to explain events unfolding from past and current scholars! Looking forward to next installments!
Excellent scholarship.
