This is such a timely subject to explore. I have to dig out my copy of the book, “Real Men: rescuing our sons from the myths of boyhood.” Written in 1999. Before 9/11. But I’ve been saying for more than a decade that 9/11 seems to have changed things with men. It seems many young men who came of age at that time were the same ones who stormed the Capitol. The average age of the men at the capitol insurrection was 45. So they were in their early to mid 20’s in 2001 and when the call for soldiers went out.
I also recommend the podcast on You tube, “Politics with Mom.” The January 23 episode, “What’s going on with Young Men?” fits with this theme perfectly.
The problems of young men under 30 are so immense I don't know where to start -- but we will get there soon. Digital dementia certainly is involved, as is isolation (exacerbated by COVID), the failure to date, blunted social skills (screens and withdrawal) and a SIEGE by male groomers like Andrew Tate and others who profit off this panic of finding no mate. It's a very, very serious matter. Women are outstripping men in education and have been for awhile--in job promotion--and in many cases in income (expect an assault on women's education), and they are going wildly militant against feminism. This group is now melded into the post-9/11 militant MRA/Oath Keeper and virulently anti-woman Proud Boys ideology that (conveniently) declares women to OWE men whatever they want, the MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way) group that withdraws from women completely and, in some cases, believes women should be exterminated except for the pretty ones (for sex and childbearing), but those should go the way they did in The Handmaid's Tale. A yet bigger problem, that nobody understand yet, is that THE Y-CHROMOSOME IS BEING DESELECTED BY HUMAN MUTATION and EVOLUTION. I have got no idea what that's going to mean, and neither does any geneticist. We're all just scared.
